The Feed the Future Innovation Laboratory for Small Scale Irrigation (ILSSI) is a cooperative research program that aims to contribute to an increase of profitable, sustainable, and gender-sensitive irrigation to support inclusive agricultural growth, resilient food systems, and nutrition and health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations. The program provides evidence that to inform development-oriented programs for improved access to small scale irrigation technologies. ILSSI is led by Texas A&M University and implemented with numerous international partners. The advertised role will support communication and outreach efforts to share the activities and scientific results of research conducted under the ILSSI program toward increasing awareness and contributing to impact in project countries and globally.
Description: The communications specialist consultant will support efforts to increase visibility of the program’s research activities, networking activities, and scientific outputs with key audiences. The communications efforts are expected to strengthen the impact of the scientific and outreach initiatives toward achieving the program’s objectives. The consultant will report to and directly work with the program management unit, while engaging the broader research team across sites and countries.
Responsibilities:
The following describe the main tasks of the assignment, which may change or be adjusted based on agreement with the consultant.
- Collaborate with project management and research team to generate media content
- Maintain website content
- Post and manage social media content across multiple platforms
- Design and manage quarterly e-newsletter; Maintain listserv for e-newsletter
- Identify opportunities for and support development of blogs and other media outreach
- Contribute to the semi-annual and annual communications workplan
- Report on communications activities on semi-annual and annual basis
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
- Five years relevant communications experience
- Experience/expertise in science, international agriculture, and/or development communications
- Demonstrated knowledge of the international development media context and multiple key audiences
- Ability to creatively translate technical material into accessible and engaging content
- Ability to work successfully with colleagues in multi-cultural and inter-disciplinary team
- Willingness to travel to remote areas in project countries in Africa to document project impact and farmer experiences, if needed
Technical skills:
- Digital content creation and website management software
- Basic graphic and/or photo editing software
- Writing and/or communications experience specific to agriculture, environment, or development.
- Software for e-newsletters (e.g. Mailchimp or similar)
Appointment information
- Type of appointment: Independent contract
- Contract renewable annually, following initial probation period of 3 months, with renewal: 1) based on performance; 2) subject to continued project funding from donor
- Equipment and software: Consultant’s own
- Location: Remote
- Reporting: Direct to Program Manager; Semi-annual and annual to Director
